    English modality. Some problems of translation

    The possibility of rendering into the translated language the modality connected with necessity, duty, advice, willingness, intention using the English modal verbs is analyzed in the article. The discourse is detailed with the aim of more accurate translation of an emotional colouring. The paper refers to the works byBritish and Ukrainian scholars in order to find the best options in translating the English modals which have no equivalents in the Ukrainian language. Different approaches of rendering the verb need both as a modal and a regular verb are suggested, the expressions have to, be to are analyzed as being used in their indefinite and perfect forms. The role of Ukrainian particles is underlined for translating the emotionally coloured utterances containing must and ought to. Much attention is given to the translation of polite requests and offers, the use of the modals will, would and may, might in formal and informal situations, the possibility to use specially selected lexis in order to make the translation sound natural when modals are substituted by phraseological expressions or colloquial phrases. Inversion is regarded as one of the ways to render the meaning of some modal verbs in informal situations. Some syntactical methods are also suggested for the translation of the English modals as well as some carefully selected vocabulary is recommended for the objective. It is emphasized that the English modality is often overlapped with the subjunctive mood which can also be an objective of the further research giving some other possibilities of rendering the personal attitude into a target language.
