- ДокументSemantic functions of adjoining constructions in English literature of the 16th and 17th centuries (based on William Shakespeare’s works)(Актуальні питання іноземної філології, 2026) Bohdan, Valerii; Dubrova, Oksana; Moroz, AndriiThe revival of interest in the study of the “History of the English Language” is due to a new perspective on its importance in the training of Germanic philologists. Original texts are the main source of information about the state of a language and the linguistic processes that took place in it at the time of their creation. William Shakespeare is the most researched author in English literature. However, despite the enormous interest, virtually no one has studied the semantic relationships between the parts of text units of expressive syntax in his works in general and adjoining constructions in particular, which makes our research relevant. The goal of our research is to study the peculiarities of semantic relationships between the parts of adjoining constructions in William Shakespeare's works. The study shows that in adjoining constructions, the types of relations typical of complex sentences (copulative, disjunctive, adversative, adverbial, object and attributive) transform, and meanings of additional information and evaluation become predominant. The analysis of the semantic relationships between the components of adjoining constructions in has led to the following conclusions: examples of a wide variety of semantic relationships have been identified – additional information, precise definition, hypothesis, conclusion, cause, consequence, contrast and enumeration. The most productive adjoining connectives were found to be “and”, “but”, “which”, “because” and “if”. Given the fairly large number of adjoining constructions, it was concluded that these expressive textual syntactic units could be attributed to the nomenclature of characteristic features of the individual authorial style of this outstanding master of imaginative writing.

Розширена класифікація приєднувальних частин у приєднувальних конструкціях; запропоновані критерії відмежування приєднувальних конструкцій від інших складних синтаксичних одиниць. Зроблено висновок про еквівалентність різнорівневих одиниць – приєднувальних конструкцій і складних речень – з погляду їх стройових основ. The paper focuses on similar and distinctive, obligatory and optional peculiarities of the formal organization of adjoining constructions (with the parts (the base utterance and the adjoined part) connected by the adjoining conjunctions that are homonymous to subordinate ones)) and composite sentences. On the material of Modem English, the criteria for dissociation of adjoining constructions from complex sentences are offered; formal and syntactic properties of the adjoining constructions are added and specified; the classification of their adjoined parts is expanded. The adjoined parts similar to the consecutive (stage) subordination, collateral subordination (homogeneous, heterogeneous and mixed) and with relationships among the parts similar to those that exist in a composite sentence with various types of syntactic relations are singled out. Structurally, the adjoining constructions and composite sentences are considered to be equivalent units at different syntactic levels.

Зроблено висновок, що як збіг лексико-граматичних форм в частинах підрядних приєднувальних конструкцій і складнопідрядних речень, так і їхнє протиставлення сприяють не тільки формальній єдності даних білатеральних одиниць, але й їхньому функціонуванню як семантично згуртованих конструкцій, що збігається з висновками дослідників складносурядних речень і приєднувальних конструкцій з сурядним приєднувальним зв'язком.
